Durning a 5 year full load test we were doing the counterweight buffer test and the car was driven up by the machine after the weights had landed. (24") We then noticed when you ran the car on inspection when you would stop the car would drive thru the brake for several inches. This drive does not have the traditional dynamic braking resistors we are use to seeing. And we just got our hands on the drive set up proceadures. Any thing sound familiar to anyone?????

We found a resistor modual in the drive with 10 capasitors on it with the end blown out of one. Not sure if this is our only problem. But will need parts or new drive to find out.

If it shorted, then any capacitors in parallel won't capacitate. (Made that word up just now, pretty cool, huh?) The whole network of capacitors would be rendered useless, that is, assuming they are all in parallel.

But if it just opened up, it won't change the overall capacitance of the network appreciably.

Change it and test again?

(sorry if this post sounds condecending, my intention is only to verbalize the issue, not preach to the choir. By trading ideas, sometimes it sparks a solution)

i have a bunch of these drives on my route and never had a cap blow. whats the car speed? which machine? how fast did you run it into the buffer?

OK we changed out the bad capasitor and still have a problem. We are hitting the buffer at contract speed. 500fpm The TM switch on top of the car will hit in the overhead at around 16 inches with a compressed buffer!! Well atleast the mounting bracket and we are hitting the bracket!! The bracket had been bent before so we belive this problem was left by the OEM as this is our first 5 year full load test. The car runs fine in auto but when you get an E-stop there is a break drop delay and a surge in the motor. We will increase speed before stopping!!! The buffer did not return after the first test so we thought it had failed to slow the car down so we replaced it with the same results. The car next to it stops on a dime with an e-stop! Greenpants we have been RED-TAGGED by the state for this failure. I am in the office now and can no longer turn wrenches but will get answers to your questions as soon as I can get someone in the machineroom.

is the car rolling before the brake sets? could it be a faulty drive not getting a stop signal? sounds like the brake supply or a mechanical brake problem. have you tried it at different places in the shaft to judge the effect of the cwt?

Greenpants this is D25 machine and we are preforming a CW buffere test by removing the roller on the TM switch and putting the car on buffer test mode. We do not have a manual but this works on the other car!

We replaced the brass washers in the brake and increased spring tension and it now drops faster.

You say it drives through the brake while stopping on inspection. Is it just sliding through the brake, or actually "driving" through the brake? Watch the pattern input to the drive with an oscilloscope, to determine if the motor is actually being powered up, or if the counterweight is just pulling the empty car through a sloppy brake.
