I keep hearing conflicting information. Is the probationary period 6 months or 12 months?

12 months, however you get bumped up to first year apprentice rate + benefits after 6 months. A company can lay you off anytime in the first 12 months if you don't display you have the skills or aptitude to become an apprentice.

Learn how to read a tape measure properly and quickly, learn wrench sizes to match bolt sizes like a 1/4-20 which is a 7/16" wrench, learn tap sizes and drill bits required for SAE course thread. This is not all you need to know but it would sure impress me if i said we need to drill and tap for a 1/4-20 bolt and someone brought me all the correct stuff to handle it.
