If a new Seismic switch , capable of sensing all 3 axis and can be installed as a complete unit in the shaft, do you still need a sensor ( old wire through the loop) for detection of counterweight movement ? Question being, the counterweight could only be moved this much by strong ground motion shaking that would be detected by the sensor? Furthermore, the amount of"g" force being detected can be adjusted in the Horizontal axis by the elevator company while the code requirement on the Z axix would remain the same. I would appreciate your comments. Ian.

Yes you still need the ring & string. If there is an earthquake and the counterweight comes out of the rails, anyone could press the reset buttons in the machine room, the car could then run and pull the counterweight through the cab killing the passengers. Personally, I would rather have just the ring & string then just the seismic switch.

Thanks for the quick reply.Ring & String just seems such old technology. Is anyone using laser sensors to detect weight movement ?
