Hollister Whitney 624 rope gripper

Very clean job, looks great!

You guys put taller machine blocking under the 131HTs, to make room for the rope grippers?

They look a bit higher, compared to the "before" pics.

why the rope grippers? is it a reg or just a spec requested via the tender?

Certainly a job to be proud of! The yellow/blue hoists really stand out against the black floor.

nice job. you def know it wasnt a otis mod because you can still get to the machine. we have to cover ours with guards so kids can play in the machine room i guess.

Very nice looking job! We are doing a similar job right now but using the MCE I control. I hope to post some pictures myself when it is done. We had to do the same deal to make the rope grippers work.

In Canada we have to have rope grippers when we complete a major alteration (MOD ) or have parallel main brakes that can stop 125% rated load independent of each other.

In the past we used to mount the rope grippers upside down at the top of the hoistway. The government inspector had us remove it and install it up in the machine room. He called it because it was not "serviceable"

This was a right pain in the ass to raise these machines.

The next MOD I am supposed to run we will have to raise Otis 219HT machines up to accommodate a rope gripper .

YUK!

interesting. why do you have to have 2 brakes independant of each other? if control is designed properly why would you need to have 2 brakes?

You need a second independent brake OR a rope gripper For Unintended motion code req's...

Once you mod any old equipment they must be brought up to today's code.

i would of thought that if the lift had unintended motion that a lift would stop even with 1 or 2 brakes.i would hope we dont go down this way. there have been some rope grippers installed and i had to walk 27 flights to reset 2 grippers when a power failure occured. also are new lifts required to have these 2nd brakes installed?

It is interesting that a lot of our current US codes have been in Canada's code for quite some time. I remember visiting my father who was a supervisor for then Dover Elevator in Toronto. I was a field adjuster for Schindler Haughton at the time. Anyhow, this was back in the mid 90's. and I remember seeing some of the gearless machines with dual brakes as well as the Bode brake used on geared machines. It was also odd seeing the rather small looking but 600 volt main line disconnects.

Very pretty 🙂 In the before pics that job looked pretty good. Its always nice to see the 260's get ripped out. Now hopefully the service guy will keep it that clean ☹️
