Does anyone know the root cause of a 108 fault ? Is it as simple as a bad encoder?

check tacho generator,brake and load weighing

can also be caused by no ground on the shield, or a loose or missing ground in the tach circut.

thanks guys it wound up being a bad tacho on the motor
