Otis Noisy Brakes

My customer is complaining that these brakes are too loud when picking. It looks like the strike points are metal on metal when picking that's causing the noise. Is there some trick to quite these down or are they just typically loud?

There may be too much clearance between the shoes and the drum when the brake is picked. The farther it picks the more noise you will have. Make sure your brake pick and hold voltages are not too high and the switches open early in the cycle

The clearance is very tight. I think they may have too much spring pressure on the arms as well. I think I need to take test weights out there and start from scratch. I was just curious if this brake is noisy even when set-up correctly. These machines sit directly above a 3 million dollar penthouse with no sound isolation. You gotta love the logic in that decision.

They are going to clap a bit when they pick.

Looks like an 18 ATF machine? they are inherentley noisy. And more than likely were not "fine tuned" when installed. Take a look at the air gap on the plungers. Too much will cause the plungers to slam open. you should be able to get some, but not all of the clap out. i would try that first before resetting your ETS/125% brake spring pressure : )

make sure that when the core picks that the whole plate is flush the the core. usually the the top is .9mm and the bottom is around .8mm. too much gap causes the loud clap. also check pick voltage a lot of jobs were never adjusted right and the pick voltage is too high.
